What are the benefits of smoking cigarettes?I know this is controversial and people like to get out of their pram so I dint need a lecture on smoking being generally bad for health and that the risks far out weight the benefits etc...BUT I've heard there are some benefits from smoking...
I've heard it can 'mask' allergies. I also heard that someone who smoked all their life had a heart attack after giving up as smoking thins the blood it can clot after you give up.
Is this true?

Smoking "masking" allergies has some evidence since smoking makes your immune system slow (your immune system having a bad reaction to something causes allergies) but at the same time your immune system is weak and fragile. Also smoking all your life and giving up smoking can cause a some heart problems but I don't think its because of your blood thinning but because smoking (nicotine) relieves your body's stress and after quitting your heart cant cope with the newly added stress and this may lead to problems. This can be avoided if you slowly quit (e.g. don't go from 2 packs to none, drop a cigarette every week or use nicotine patches) and obviously if you never started. I've also heard smoking helps you lose weight but i dont believe it. What you stated is basically true but like you said SMOKING IS NOT GOOD FOR YOU!!!

I've never smoked but I've heard from people that do, including my father and my mother-in-law, that smoking helps you lose weight and keep it off. I'm not sure how much truth there is to that or how that works but I know when my father quit smoking after almost 20 years, he put on some weight.

Just as a comment about the answer that said that smoking can help you keep off weight....
Probably when you stop smoking, you eat more. Instead of smoking, you get something to eat. Hence, you gain weight when you stop smoking and may lose weight if you do.
Smoking is horrible for you. If you love yourself and the people around you, don't smoke. You'll live a longer and healthier life, and you'll be happy for it. :)
if ur gonna b a frend b a good 1
The ONLY effects smoking has is: BAD BREATH, HEART DISEASE, STROKE, LUNG CANCER, TEETH LOSS (ALL OF THEM), DEVASTATION TO FAMILY MEMBERS, AND FRIENDS WHEN THEY ARE BURRING YOU. I KNOW, I BURIED MY MOTHER, FATHER AND SISTER, NOT TO MENTION NUMEROUS AUNTS, UNCLES AND COUSINS FROM SMOKING, SO THE MORAL OF THE STORY IS ****S T O P S M O K I N G ! ! ! ! ! ****

It keeps weight off for some people. Cigarettes can act as an appetite supressant causing you to eat less instead of always being hungry. Cigarettes also have a laxative effect and can make your digestive system more regular. Also it calms you down and relieves stress and makes you feel better when you're sad. But at the same time, they are not good for you and do more bad than good in the long run. But not everyone who smokes will get cancer. Smoking is not a gauranteed cancer habit... It just puts you at a great risk. Even if you don't get cancer from it, you will still most likely get wrinkles, bad skin, yellow teeth, or you will cough alot and be stuck with a permanent cold which is very annoying. On the other hand, my whole family on my dad and mom's side are heavy smokers and have not had one trace of lung cancer in our family. Not one. They also still look 10 years younger than what they really are, so that throws the "smoking will cause cancer 100%" theory out the window. But... Do you REALLY want to gamble with your life over cigarettes? Something to think about...
