If smoking cessation (patch, gum, etc.) were cheaper, would more people quit?

If smoking cessation (patch, gum, etc.) were cheaper, would more people quit?I quit smoking 5 years ago (cold turkey) and I know it's hard for many people to kick the habit. But the smoking cessation products are very expensive. Many people, especially those who are on a fixed income I'm sure can't afford these things, or the cost is a serious deterrent to quitting.

My question is: if they were cheaper, do you think more people would quit? Do you think the government or other agencies (nonprofit groups, retailers, etc.) should step in and perhaps offer rebates or other incentives so people have more incentive and help quitting?

I think if the government cares about the health of its people and the environment they should offer assistance to people to help them to quit, after all there is help out there to get people off drugs, and cigarettes are more addictive than cocaine or heroin.

If you have any thoughts or insights about this topic, feel free to answer. Thanks, everyone!

Everyone, I urge you to contact your state representatives, if Iowa, Maryland and New York have these programs, we may be able to get them elsewhere. Thanks!

Yes more people would quit. When the patch is $ 50 plus a week. A carton of smokes are $ 35 for 15 days It's cheaper to smoke....

I think it would be great if the government offered rebates or other incentives for people to stop smoking. I also wished that there were more non-profits that ran support groups. It's nice to be able to talk to other people quitting when you are trying to quit.

Thanks!

that probably would help alot of people. not sure about other states, but here in Iowa very very recently, i think just last week on the 1st, they started giving away free patches and gum. If you live in iowa call the 'one eight hundred quit line' and see if you can get some. it won't only save your life but your kids, friends, strangers, and the environment. think, quitting smoking could save the world....if everyone thought that way, cancer would go down to very minimal....lung cancer kills so many lives, it's a tragedy, no need to die from something so preventable...

Actually though the smoking cessation products are mostly cheaper than the cigarettes. My opinion is that cold turkey is the only way to go. I have 4 friends that failed with Chantix which is supposed to be the best thing going now.The government doesn't really want people to quit because then they lose all of that revenue.
