When quitting smoking, how can I maintain or actually lose weight?I am starting the patch today and was wondering if anyone out there has successfully quit smoking without gaining weight and/or actually was able to diet and lose weight during the process.

I have tried to quit smoking a bunch of times and I really need to go for it again. My blood pressure is up and I just can't breathe right anymore. Typically, however, I gain weight when I try to quit and I cannot afford to gain any more. I need to get rid of this winter packing and the winter packing of many years before in order to be healthy again.

I would appreciate any tips that people who have been in the same situation can give to me. Also, I would like to know if the typical weight gain associated with smoking cessation is due entirely to eating habits or if there is a physiological basis for weight gain despite a healthy diet and exercise. Any information that anyone can give will be helpful.

People usually swap an addiction for another. Someone addicted to smoking might start eating more instead, therefore gaining more weight.

Join the gym, and make that your new addiction. Your lifestyle will dramatically change for the better.

The best way is to go cold turkey and not to gradually reduce the amount you smoke per day.

the thing is, that smoking does not cause you to not gain weight, and quitting does not cause you to gain weight. What does, is the fact that people usually replace that oral fixation and need with food. Your best bet, is to just watch what you eat. chew gum if you feel the need to eat. Exercise also will help eleviate some of that stressful eating as well, and help lose the weight. Good luck. I quit over a year ago and I'm still fighting the bulge.
