Question by Heather C: Is anyone having difficulties with quitting smoking on Chantix?
My fiance is now almost at the end of his third month of Chantix (recommended therapy is three months); however, still continues to take "drags" here and there equally about 4 to 8 cigarettes after the entire day is over. He says that he is still having difficult getting over the habit of smoking, however refuses to seek any kind of counseling help including the counseling that is provided through the Chantix website. He says that he doesn't have time to call people or go on the internet to research tips on smoking cessation, but seems to find the time go to on facebook and/or ebay. However, claims that he desperately wants to quit. He heard from his doctor that people who are on it for six months, rather than the three, have a greater success at quitting; however, the extra three months is for maintenance after you have totally quit during the first three months. He seems to be under the false assumption that he has six months to quit and won't listen to anything different. My problem is that first of all with fourh month's dose, insurance is no longer covering it. Instead of costing us $ 23.00, it will cost us $ 140.00 for the medication. But the most disturbing problem is his horrible mood swings. My life has become almost unbearable. I'm constantly walking on egg shells not to upset him because he will go off at the tiniest thing. My life is already depressing enough with my dying father who is at the end-stage of ALS who could pass away any day and my son who has autism and possibly a brain tumor and to top it off, we are supposed to be getting married in 4 months!!! Believe me, I have been very supportive during the last three months, but it is very difficult now since he knows that he is "stuck" in his current situation with smoking, but won't get any kind of outside help. Meanwhile, I getting more and more depressed as I am the constant victim of verbal abuse....HELP!!!
Just to answer the first person's response, he has tried EVERYTHING to quit (patches, gum and lozenges) and Wellbutrin which he also had horrible mood swings while taking!!
Best answer:
I too used Chantix with Wellbutrin. At a certain point he has to take the plunge and stop the sporatic drags. It worked for me and I smoked for 25 years. He obviously is not ready to stop, you have to commit.
