Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of using a Hookah? My 18-year-old son recently purchased a Hookah. He says it is safer than smoking & that the amount of tobacco used is so miniscule that it is barely enough to do anything. He says that Hookah is a harmless way of relaxation because one is just sucking in the air through a hose & it leaves one feeling refreshed & relaxed. It is popular among many teens & college students & from the research I've already done, seems to be harmless. It is something that is popular in some coffee houses. To me however, it resembles a bong & if the amount of tobacco is so miniscule, then I wonder why bother putting it in to begin with? My son doesn't believe in smoking (cigarettes) or doing drugs or drinking alcohol. He does like an occasional time with his hookah now & then though. I've told him as long as he is discreet & it is not done around his younger sister, he can do so since he's an adult, but I'd like to know more about hookahs if anyone can help. I'm not so sure it's all that safe.

Smoking anything isn't safe.

It cools the smoke same as a bong but it allows more smoke into lungs because its cooled thus being more dangerous because of deeper draws and more smoke in the lungs tell him to quit tobacco is a very bad and lasting habit.I know 34 year smoker.

If it involves tobacco smoke, it's not harmless. Don't be fooled, the amount of tobacco is NOT "minuscule", and that's what makes it a refreshing and relaxing experience. It's not a lot, but it's not "minuscule". Just sucking in air does nothing, and trust me, that's not what he's doing.
That said, I have a hookah. Maybe it's my own self-control, will-power, or bank account, but I don't smoke with it often, perhaps once every few weeks at most.
An advantage is that you can buy flavored tobacco (which smell and taste better than foul cigarettes), and it takes some effort to set up and assemble. This makes it different from cigarettes, because it's not as easy to just pull out the hookah to smoke whenever you feel like you NEED to smoke. The way you operate a hookah gives rise to more relaxed and social environments, not nervous puffing.

It really all depends on what your son is putting in the hookah. When you go to a hookah bar (they are all the rage right now), the contents are usually something like 90% flavored fruit molasses (the bars have lots of flavors to choose from) and 10% tobacco. Hookah tobacco is not supposed to have any tar in it, and the small amount of nicotine is supposedly filtered out by the water in the base. I say supposedly because I don't really trust that all of it could ever be filtered out, but that's just my opinion.
