Chapter 4: Tobacco: Recovery Across the Continuum (TRAC) -- a stage-based, motivational treatment model developed specifically for people with behavioral health conditions An overwhelming majority of people with mental illness also have an addiction to harmful tobacco products as well as complex physical health conditions. On average, people with severe mental illness die 20 to 25 years earlier from potentially tobacco-related illnesses than those not diagnosed with a severe mental illness. Full recovery is significantly compromised for people with substance use disorders and the numerous primary health conditions that accompany tobacco use, especially for these people. This video (of the training held May 2010) will help behavioral health professionals advance tobacco recovery among consumers. It will focus on the unique interplay between tobacco, mental illness, substance use disorders, and physical health conditions. Attendees will learn the different pharmacological treatment approaches to help consumers reduce and/or eliminate tobacco use. Additionally, the session will focus on the potential medical consequences and treatment considerations when assisting the reduction and elimination of tobacco use.
