How harmful to my health would smoking a couple cigarettes a week be?

How harmful to my health would smoking a couple cigarettes a week be?I've started smoking but I don't want to get addicted, but I also want to smoke every once and awhile.

youll eventually just get addicted. everyone starts out "'smoking a few a week"

The other answerer is correct. Any smoke is causing damage to your lungs and nicotine is highly addictive. There is no one that can smoke "once in a while". Stop while you can, otherwise, you will never have any money and will have health problems the rest of your life. Your choice.

I'm no doctor, but I suppose ANY smoking is bad. But then again, I've been smoking for ten years and I can still run two miles in under 14 minutes.

The main thing is don't associate smoking with any habits, like, don't light up every time you get in your car, or right when you get off work, or right after dinner. Make it a random, speratic (sp?) thing.

Theres no telling. Of course smoking more raises your risk of cancer, but it is possible to get cancer from just 1 cigarette. Depends on your body. My mother for example never smoked cigarettes as long as I was alive. She died when I was 23 of lung and brain cancer (spread to her brain). She hadnt smoked cigarettes in at least 23 years and still eventually got it. You will get addicted though, I agree with the first answer, thats how everybody starts. Nobody just says "Im going to start smoking a pack a day". People think theyre strong enough to not get addicted, they think theyre different and it cant happen to them. I wouldnt underestimate the power of nicotine.

Anyone who smokes more often than once every three weeks is addicted. So you are already addicted. You just haven't realized it yet. In fact, its often harder for the occasional smoker to quit than the 2 pack a day man. I would suggest that you read Allen Carr's The Easy Way to Stop Smoking, if not as an aid for quitting, then to understand why it is you smoke occasionally, and why you don't even get out of smoking what you think you get out of it. How harmful is it? Well that depends. People who are susceptible to smoke develop COPD after 10 years of light smoking and die 15 to 20 years before their life expectancy even if they were light smokers. How likely is that? More likely then developing lung cancer. If you have allergies, then you are likely a person who is developing COPD. Heart disease is much more likely in a smoker, even a light one.
