Nicotine patches have a mixed success rate. Some have found good success some have had bad experiences. The major complains that I have come across are of people saying the patch did not stop the cravings. Some would continue smoking.

Some also complained that the strapped patch on the arm would come off on its own making it difficult to keep it on all through the day.

They're not successful.
The major hurdle you have to overcome is habit.
I'm a pharmacist and ex-smoker so I know about both.
You have connected smoking with certain activities of your everyday life that when you do them it's impossible for you not to light a cigarette.
For example I used to smoke when in front of the PC, or when putting a drink.
So what I did is I slept at my store for 5 days and did not go to my house.
That way I quit smoking, not for the first time.
The revelation was that the cold turkey syndrome was very easy to overcome, it wasn't about nicotine after all, it was all about the habit, the incredible need I felt for smoking when I did certain things that I had taught myself I wanted to smoke with.
In order to quit it you'll have to change your habits for about a week.
And in order to stay away for life you'll have to look for something else, much less damaging, to take it's place.
Sports are the best solution.
But you can't quit, unless you find yourself a good motive.
That's the first thing to look for, motivation.
And remember, the most difficult thing about quitting is not quitting, it's not taking it up again,same as with drugs.
So you really need to change many things in your life if you're looking to take smoking out of it.
