I'm confused about stimulus and global warming, are you?- $ 198 million for U.S. military benefits for Filipinos who fought for the U.S. during WWII

- $ 75 million for "smoking cessation activities"

- $ 87 million for the "design of a new polar icebreaker"

- $ 335 million for HIV/STD screening

- $ 600 million to buy hybrid vehicles for federal employees

Item 3. 87 million for just the design of a new icebreaker? And these people are the sames ones telling us about global warming and the ice caps are melting and will be gone in a couple years.

not really. Some of the items are clearly not directly related to stimulus, e.g. smoking cessation but on the other hand the designing of a new icebreaker will clearly help some people because we still have ice even during this warming phase. If you live in Ohio and people in California say that you should not use any heating oil because of global warming; would you think this would be reasonable?

It would be pretty tough to argue that one should not have HIV screening because it would help employ more healthcare workers or because people with AIDS die earlier and therefore will not consume as much CO2. I think what you are seeing is democrats that have been denied any ability to get their favorite projects funded are doing what most politicians cant resist: add their pet project to any and every bill that comes before them. Similarly, I think you will find some interesting republican items if you look through the senate bill that was proposed by the republicans (not the slimmed down comprise version).

The hybrid vehicles will definitively produce less CO2 than the ubiqutous Crown Victoria. If you want people to get the message you have to lead by example. Just building the hybrid vehicles for the government will put many american workers back to work. Is there a problem with that?

Personally, I feel the two items should be separated. As Pres. Obama and many republicans have said: create a stimulus package that put people back to work. Workers pay taxes and that should get everything moving again.

Only the northern ice cap will be gone, and only during the summer. There's still plenty of ice for ships to break through.

No I am not confused. As others point out, global warming is not expected to instantly eliminate arctic ice in the winter. And hopefully we will get a handle on things so that it will not be ice free in the summer either.

You complain about 1.292 billion in expenditures out of 780 billion. That is only about 0.16%, and almost half of that goes for hybrid cars which will help the auto industry and save gas. Can't you find more to criticize than than that?
