you need to have a strong will power to quit smoking.
you can start with chewing gums or have a chocolate whenever you have the urge to smoke.
for chronic smokers they can have NICOTINE TRANS DERMAL PATCHES which deliver slow doses of nicotine in the body.
you might get mild symptoms initially but later they are subsided.

When I was 12 years older than you I gave a 5 pack a day habit after smoking for over 55 years
If your doing over a pack a day, patches, gum, losenge, Welluburtin, Zanax etc didn't help me.
Step one find a darn good reason to quit, LIke I want to see my grandkid graduate colledge. Or the taxes on the smokes are unreal (they sell for $ 11 a carton in Mexico, the rest is taxes)
Ask you Dr for some anti anxiety meds, I used ativan for about $ 10
Spend a week timing your smokes, Find an overall average,
Example say your doing one ever 10 min, Next week start doing
1 every 15 min, add on 5 min every week. If you goof up, restart that time frame, You won't be perfect, but don't beat yourself up.
When you get down 1/2 pack a day, the other stuff can help

I can tell you a way to help you quit smoking without using drugs. I have several friends that have successfully quit without having the usual ill effects usually associated with quiting like nervous jitters or gaining weight. See the Peggy Fleming video at http://www.12weeks.info
I don't know exactly why this works but it does. I am told that it contains an herb called Gentain Root that helps reduce stress. Not only will you have the benefits of quiting but your health will improve so rapidly, you may choose to keep using this great natural product from now on. It is a little expensive but it is also Free. I say that because it is cheaper than smoking.
