Do you know exactly why you can't cut a nicotine patch in half?I'm using the NY Quits stuff (and we get it for free so if your state doesn't have a quitline you should think about starting one,) and the patches say that you can't cut them in half.
But I have two boxes of the full strength ones and none of the second step.
Why can't you cut them in half? It's only adhesive with half of the current amount of product on it, if you don't use the other half you're cutting your dosage amount, and that's it.
Does anyone know why this is?
Dreamer - there are three phases to these patches. Each are ten MGs below the other one, and it's time for me to start the second phase.
Oh yeah, and it says right on the box and on the patch itself not to cut them in half.

Im not sure the reason of why you cant cut them in half...but if it makes you feel any better, my mum cuts hers into fourths because they are too strong and she seems to be fine (in most aspects) haha. but seriously, I havent noticed anything wrong with it.

because you would cut your dosage in half and you're supposed to get a certain amount to stop craving those cigs

These nicotine patches are transdermal patches, and if you alter them by cutting them, you may receive all or most of the nicotine at once vs. over an extended time period (which is how they are intended for use - to deliver a small dose of nicotine over an extended time). A transdermal patch is used for a very controlled dosing of medication over time. These patches have a membrane through which the medication seeps, touching the skin. The medication permeates the skin and enters the body. This is a continuous dosing of medicine - in this case, nicotine.
By cutting the patch, you're not 'cutting your dosage amount', as you state, because with transdermal medication patches of any kind, you can never be sure of what dose you are getting when you cut the patch in halves or fourths.
In your situation, where you only want half of the nicotine in the patch form, you are probably going to have to purchase the patches for the lower dosage, or perhaps go ahead and try nicotine gum after you've exhausted your full-strength patches? I've also heard of people simply elongating the time between applying new patches, to space out the nicotine permeation. I'm not sure how often you apply a new patch, but say for example it's every 12 hours? You might want to try applying a new patch every 18 or 24 hours and see how that goes instead.
Best of luck.
