How does smoking worsens the condition of a patient suffering from "Deep Vein Throbosis"?

How does smoking worsens the condition of a patient suffering from "Deep Vein Throbosis"?I'm a severe smoker till I was diagnosed with D.V.T three years back. I was admitted to Hospital and was thrombolised for more than two weeks. I was discharged with a prescribed dose of 'Anti Coagulants' to be used by me all my life. The doctor who cured my disease asked me to quit smoking strictly. He said smoking will work anti to the drugs (Anti Coagulants) and cause more blood clots in the vascular system.

I've stopped to smoke ever after though, I want to know how exactly smoke causes clots in the blood and what element in the smoke actually causes thrombus?

hmmm....

smoking doesn't cause blood clotting, it causes vasoconstriction.
vasoconstriction means the vein are constricted(the lumen is getting small)

now the effect of smoking in deep vein thrombosis is... if you're still smoking, the veins will be consticted that prevents the blood to flow(the blood cant pass by) that later on will cause thrombosis or blood clot.

i hope you understand
goodluck:)

Health concerns usually are the main reasons that people decide to quit. Everyone is aware that cigarette smoking (and the general use of tobacco) can cause lung cancer. However, it can also include other cancers like throat, voice box, mouth, esophagus, kidney, stomach, pancreas, bladder, and cervical cancers. COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) is a progressive lung disease that many who began to smoke in the 1960's, are now facing. In addition, the blood vessels in a person's arms and legs can narrow due to cigarette use, and cause a blood clot to form – leading to strokes. Smokers are also twice as likely to die from a heart attack.

If that is not reason enough to quit, did you know that quitting smoking could improve your appearance? Smoking causes a yellowing of fingernails, skin, and teeth. It also prematurely wrinkles the facial skin. You have bad breath, bad smelling clothes and hair, and your children REEK of cigarette smoke! Secondhand smoke that a child is subject to can lead that child to asthma, more ear infections than normal, bronchitis on a more regular basis, and more colds and illness than a child in a non-smoking environment.

Women have several extra dangers when smoking and taking birth control. This may lead to stroke, heart attack, and blood clots in the leg. In addition, smoking while pregnant could cause miscarriage, low-birth weight, and is associated with SIDS. Obviously, there are more dangers to just you and your health. If you are not important enough to get yourself to quit, then perhaps your children are.

So now you're a little more educated. You know the benefits of quitting smoking.

Basically, smoking makes your blood clot quicker. (vastly simplified, but accurate)

When treating a DVT, the aim is to prevent new clots. I've seen patients taking the right dose of warfarin clot and guess what, they smoked.
