I quit smoking but still smoke a cigarette before bed sometimes. Am I delaying the healing process?I smoked for about 18 years and a pack a day. I recently quit for my wife cause we have a baby on the way. That was a week ago. Since then I have smoked maybe 3 cigarettes. Always at night before bed kind of as a reward for making it the whole day. To be honest quitting has been really easy now that I had a reason to quit. Here comes the question... People say that a few days after you quit you get congestion in the lungs and start coughing stuff up. That has not happened and it's been a week. Could that one cigarette every two days at night be delaying those process's? Or is it o.k. to not abuse cigarettes and smoke one every once in a while. I don't want to hear from people who say each cigarette will kill you and bs like that. I just want real facts backed up from real people who have been through this and can speak from experience.

I would suggest you not smoke cigarettes at all but also smoking every once in a while will probably help you crave less for cigarettes. What I usually do is chew on candy or gum. That usually helps me stop the craving. Don't know if it will help you but maybe you should try it. :)

If you have one cigarette a day or one a week, you have not quit! You are still a smoker, so stop kidding yourself.

Reading between the lines I sense that your main concern is the effect of second-hand smoke on your family. You can still smoke, as much or little as you like, and eliminate all the second-hand tobacco risks.
