Is smoking approximately once a week as bad for your health as regular smoking?

Is smoking approximately once a week as bad for your health as regular smoking?I have several friends who like to do this, what they call recreational smoking. They mostly smoke novelty things, such as clove cigarettes, and tobacco pipes. I care about their health, so the only problem I have with this is, naturally, the long-term affects of doing this.

They claim that smoking like this allows the lungs and other functions affected time to recover, and has minimal long-term effects, but I am not easily convinced.

Can anyone enlighten me, that is to say, does anyone have a light?

Smoking is smoking. if you light something on fire, will it not be burned? if they've been doing this for a while try telling them what they should know; that one cigarette is equally as bad as swallowing
1.54 oz of acid. and one cigar (if they smoke them) is equal to 10 cigarettes.

Your friends are making their own personal choices, so while I understand your concern, I would not prod them about their smoking habits. Smoking every once in a while is not damaging. The only reason smoking is so harmful in the first place is because of the nicotine. This addictive substance is what causes people to smoke numerous packs a day, which is very damaging. Having a cigarette every now and then is almost harmless, as long as it does not become a habit. My friends that do this generally get bored after a while and quit. In response to your initial question, smoking once a week is no where near as bad for your health as regular smoking.

No, it is not as bad as regular smoking. The longer a person goes without a cigarette the more their body will clear out the "bad" stuff. Even as little as 15 minutes will help. Several days shows big improvements. Several years and there will be little to no signs.

However, smoking "regularly" will greatly lengthen the amount of time before their body can recover.

Oh, and then there's that cancer thing. Research is all over the map on that one, just how much it takes to get cancer doesn't seem to be known yet.

Better safe then sorry. But, bugging friends to quit doesn't work.

obviously it won't be as bad as smoking a pack a day, but it probably may still have bad affects on your health.

In a young person in good health, the health effects of occasional smoking are negligible. Of greater concern is the possibility that occasional smoking will become regular smoking. Some may increase the amount smoked until they're addicted. There's a gene that makes some people under 17 particularly susceptible to this sort of rapid addiction -- interestingly, it stops having an effect once you've reached 17. So if you or your friends smoke on the weekends, be careful not to smoke at others times.
