Is this normal when quitting smoking?I'm in the process of quitting and have not had a cigarette for 4 days now.
I have been going through radical emotional swings. I'm an adult male and for some reason I have been breaking down in tears or I get very hostile for no reason. I fell nervous, lonely and scared and I'm constantly tired and depressed. Are these things normal?

Yes, mood swings are one of the key withdrawal symptoms from cigarettes. Unfortunately they are also the reason why many people fail to quit.
Are you quitting cold turkey? If so then remember there are many treatments out there which can assist you in your attempt, such as nicotine patches/gum, some medications etc. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about what is on offer, it will make things a lot easier :)

With all the additives & chemicals in cigarettes, any of these are possible. If you're having severe withdrawl like this, ask your doc for something-Chantix or similar product. These withdrawl symptoms can last for weeks. There are many options out there that work. Congrats on trying-hang in there. Be persistent whether you slip up or not. Don't feel bad if you can't go cold turkey. VERY few can, no matter what they say.

nicotine is actually one way that manic depressives self medicate, nicotine actually soothes that part of the brain that controls depression
ask your doctor to prescribe you something for depression, my doctor prescribed Wellbutrin for me

Honestly I was wondering the same thing myself for a while there.
My boyfriend is/was a chronic smoker (we are in the process of getting him off the cigarettes).
Since he is so heavily addicted to them he becomes anxious, hostile and sometimes paranoid for no real reason and with little warning. Our GP says they are a normal reaction to the body not having its hit of nicotine which it (apparently) needs to get through the day.
Stop putting so much pressure on yourself and take each day as it comes.
All the best of luck!!
Always, MissLith
