It is classified as an alkaloid in organic chemistry and is found as a chief alkaloid of tobacco plant (nicotiana tobacum) wherein it is present as a salt of malic or citric acid. Its concentration is highest in leaves of toabacco where it varies from 0.6 to 8 % depending upon the kind of tobacco.

Nicotine is readily soluble in water and has an unpleasant smell unlike that of tobacco. Nicotine has a burning taste and is very poisonous. Nicotine turns brown on exposure to air due to bonding with oxygen.


Nicotine USES

Used mainly as an insecticide and fumigant in some countries. It is a contact poison. It is totally decomposed over a time and does not leave any residue on plants where it is used.

In the manufacture of smoking cessation products like nicotine based chewing gums and patches. Here it is used in the form of nicotine polacrilex.

Can be used to manufacture nicotinic acid and thus a regenerable raw material can be used if produced from this source. Presently nicotinic acid is produced from beta picoline due to economical reasons.


Nicotine THERAPATIC USE

As an ectoparasiticide. Has been used as an enthalmintic.

A lot of interest has been recently directed towards the therapeutic potential of nicotine because of two diseases namely parkinsons and alzhimers. These two diseases have some behavorial similarity but in contrast to alzihimers , parkinsonsism is related to the destruction of brain dopamine neurons wiht few changes in the nicotine receptor. Some researchers suggest that nicotine benefits in parkinson patient may be related to the drugs ability to shutdown (desensitize) dopamine neurons.
