Question about pulled wisdom tooth and dry sockets.?Hello, i have a question about dry sockets. I just got my wisdom tooth pulled. Anyways i know that u cant smoke ciggerates while having a pulled tooth because of the risk of dry socket. I bought camels new product camel snus, which is not a ciggerate, nor is it chewing tobbaco. What it is is a tiny bag of tobbaco that u put under your top lip, there is no spitting, there is no smoking, nor is there any kinda sucking. Will that harm my pulled tooth in any way? I guess my real question is, what is the main reason people get dry socket? is it the sucking motion people do when they puff on a cig? Is it the actuall cig smoke? or is is the chemical of the nicotine that gets inside the area and causes the dry socket? I have always been curious about dry socket, and have though about going to school in dentistry, and really always wanted to know the real answer, and on my dental sheet my dentist gave my after getting my tooth pulled, it only says no smoking, versus the fact of chewing tobbaco (never says anything about that). Thanks for the answers :)

It is the actual sucking on the cigarette that can pull the plug (blood clot) out of the socket and therefore causing a dry socket. It is very painful. Spitting can do it as well.

As well as the risk caused by sucking on something, there is also the risk of nicotine thinning your blood and bleeding out. I have heard of dentist specifically mentioning not to smoke for this reason, however I believe that only applies to immediately (few days) after. I personally would risk it, but then I've also heard dry socket hurts like hell, so I guess thats a risk you'll have to consider.
