why are my husbands nails white-ish looking? they don't have that healthy pink color to them.?i just noticed it today... his nails don't have that healthy pink look to them like most nails... i'm almost positive it is a recent thing... could any of these be the culprit?

he smokes 8-9 cigarettes a day
we don't eat red meat on a regular basis (just chicken)
he gets little to no exercise
he is a healthy weight, and in fact a little underweight.

i know this condition with the nails is a sign of poor circulation problems. but i want to know how to fix it. is there any way i can change his diet? should he quit smoking? what are the long term effects of this? what is going on here?

Are his hands cold? That alone means paler nail beds, and is no cause for concern.

The smoking isn't good for his circulation, but I'm sure he knows that. The lack of exercise, likewise. (Take after-dinner walks, maybe?) I don't think lack of red meat has a thing to do with it.

If his nails are pale after he handles something cold or has gotten cold himself, this could be an indicator of a specific circulatory problem known as Reynaud's syndrome.

he just needs to eat more vegetables and he could smoke a little less

White spots are common on nails. I think if you hit / hurt your nail, you get white spots. If the entire nail bed is white, you should see a doctor, from what I just read, as this can be indication of a serious problem. Completely white nails "can indicate anything from arsenic poisoning to leprosy"

"Leukonychia has also been linked to typhoid fever, frostbite, trichinosis, gout, diphtheria, cholera, acute rheumatism, myocardial infarction, colitis, and any number of other ghastly ailments."

So, if it's totally white, I'd send him to the doctor as you have no way of knowing what the cause is.
