How do employers test for tobacco use?I am applying for a job in a local hospital and they have a no tobacco rule. I recently quit and am wondering how long until the test will return a negative result.

The tobacco should be out of your system within 72 hours.
By the way, to the person that commented below. It's true. There is a hospital in Seattle that makes you take this test. NO smoking policy. It's starting to be a big thing around here.
Good job on quitting.

I've never heard of somewhere not allowing you to use tobacco period. My interpretation of a no tobacco use policy would be no tobacco DURING WORK or on work property. If that's the case, then they wouldn't test.
I've never heard of a tobacco test. I have heard of insurance premium's being higher for smokers than non-smokers. In that case, they go off of the honor system. Innocent until proven guilty kind of thing. Once in a while, they may request information from your doctor's to indicate smoke-related health concerns to determine if you've been dishonest.

Absolutely, Beth M. In fact, I was doing a research paper on drug testing and found that 1% of the Fortune 500 companies test for tobacco and do not hire tobacco users. Most of them say it is to keep health costs/insurance costs down, but I don't see how smoking is any different from being overweight.
It's just like a test for any other drug, except they are looking for nicotine.
I'm sending you a link, although the page is kind of confusing. However, there's a chart on there that says that "infrequent users" take 2-3 days to get the nicotine out of their systems. However, if you're a regular smoker, it could take up to two weeks before all of the nicotine is out of your system.
Good luck!
