I am pregnant and having a huge amount of trouble quitting smoking. Can I use patches? What is worse?I am preganant with my second child and am having alot of trouble quitting smoking this time. Last time it wasn't so bad, but this time I am so stressed with work and my first born that I really rely on sitting with a cup of tea and a fag at night to keep my sanity. I have been told that I can't use patches, but what is worse - smoking or patches when pregnant. No lectures please - I know that neither is best, but don't judge me.

just remember before you light up... " Do I care about my unborn child enough to delay my pleasures?"

Hey mate, I'm sure u are aware of the dangers n risk involved so there is no need to spell it out to u. When u get the urge to have a smoke just remind ur self that u want to give ur unborn the best possible chance of being born healthy. It will b more stressful to deal with once bubs is born should he/she be born with any abnormalities. Kick the habit now b4 its too late or b4 u do some real damage to ur baby. All the best in the pregnancy n believe that u can do it. Have faith in urself, ur stong, u will not regret it in days n years to come. Cheers

my friend was totally stressed about quitting when she was prego and her doc said that her level of stress was way worse for the baby than smoking a couple cigs a day... she switched to the lightest she could find and cut way back on how many and it relieved that stress. i quit when i got pregnant with my 6 month old twins and i STILL think about having a cigarette almost DAILY... ugh!!! i feel like i'm never gonna mentally get over it! but here is some info i found on the web:
It is great for you and your baby that you are trying to quit smoking. The next step is to figure out the safest way for you to do so.
Using the nicotine patch in pregnancy is controversial. It's hard for health professionals to prescribe a medication for a pregnant woman that clearly is not safe for her fetus. In reality, though, it is probably safer than smoking, especially if the goal is to get you off the replacement within a few weeks. All in all, if nicotine replacement is the only way that you can quit, it may be better to expose the baby to it for a short time, than to continue to smoke through the pregnancy. Talk to your doctor about whether nicotine replacement is safe in your particular situation.
You also may want to check out an excellent article on how to give up cigarettes on the National Cancer Institute's Clearing the Air website.
good luck to you :) and congratulations on your pregnancy!

with my first pregnancy i tryed so hard to quit but couldn't,i was also told that i couldn't use the patches.so the best i could do was cut down.unfortunetly i lost the baby, but not because of the smoking.but when i was at the hospital they asked me if i had smoked and i said yes,and explained that the doctors told me not to use the patches. i was informed that day that using the patches were alot more safe then actually smoking.it's all the chemicals and posions in the smokes that are bad.the patches only have nicotine in them which is what your addicted to.nicotine by it's self is better then nicotine with all the other chemicals.
after i lost the baby i quit cold turkey,i just wish i had of done it earlier.
good luck.

i had the same problem, my doc told me to cut back to 3 a day (it causes more stress to go cold turkey and can do more harm than good) I was told this by an ob, my local gp and hospital.... I found it hard to stop completely as my brother decided to commit suicide when i was 19-20 weeks pregnant... I was also told not to use patches - and i wouldnt recomend it while pregnant... Good luck and you will get there -
