Chewing gum makes me want to smoke.

Nicotine patches just make my arm ache.

I'd say the only best sure fire way to quit.. is to quit cold turkey.

It depends on how long you chew them for.

In all seriousness, nicotine patches and nicotine chewing gum have a fairly similar success rate, both have success rate percentages in the low single digits.

If I were to quit, then I'd use Allen Carr, who's success rate (if I remember correctly) is at least in the teens.

I believe the gum is slightly more effective. The nicotine lozenges have a higher success rate than either -- I researched this back when I was quitting a couple of years ago. And they're easier to use than the gum. Horrible taste at first, but it goes away after the first day.

I think that what work depends in part on your own smoking patterns. For example, I found the patch ineffective because I couldn't control the dose -- I was either getting too much nicotine or too little -- but some people are OK with it.
