Bipolar and smoking cessation?I am bipolar. I would like to quit smoking. I was prescribed Chantix but made all sorts of excuses before I could fill the prescription. Luckily, after going into a mixed episode I saw my doctor and she said well thankful you didnt actually fill the prescription because it would have made it worse. So my question is, what is a good way for bipolar persons to quit smoking. Will the patch make things worse? Nicotine gum? What can I do to quit that wont make me go "crazy"?

How about cold turkey. Just carry a pack around with you, so you know that you can have a smoke any time you want too. Now when it comes time to have one you tell your self that you really don't need one at this time. you will be surprised how fast you will not need them any more. I did this and quit after 3 days of doing this. You never lose the urge but you also don't need the smoke any more

I'd try the gum, ANY type. Find a something else to put in your mouth. Lollypops, candy.. etc
I'm bipolar and I smoke. When I would try to quit, I slowly backed off and chewed regular gum

As a smoker and being bipolar I have found that my addiction to nicotine is greater and a deep psychological dependence which I was able to stop with nicotine gum for a year. My problem was that I became dependent on the gum as much as the cigarette, chewing twenty pieces a day. I suggest a smoking cessation group along with the gum or patch for support and alternative lifestyle changes. Try your local hospital for such a group and try to substitute the nicotine in some way. I am still working on this myself, but will kick this habit either the old fashion way (dying) or alternative lifestyle changes. Thanks for listening.
