1. How old were you when you started smoking? How old were you when you quit? 17 to 26; then again from ages 34 to 51
2.What were your family members' smoking habits and your own feelings about their choices in that regard? Neither of my parents smoked. My grandparents smoked, which I hated as a kid.
3. What/who prompted you to smoke your first cigarette? A friend. I caved to peer pressure.
4. After your first smoke did you personally plan on using cigarettes again or was it a physical desire to use again? I did not plan on smoking any more. Smoking became social.
5. When you started smoking, did you plan on becoming addicted? No
6. How did you get your cigarettes? At first I went to the store on my bicycle and bought them for a quarter a pack.
7. How did you feel physically the first time you smoked? Dizzy - and cool
8. When you first started smoking, how much did you smoke? I only smoked a couple of cigarettes. When it became a habit, I smoked 8 - 10 a day at first.
9. When you first started smoking, when or in what situations did you typically smoke? Social situations
10.What prompted you to continue smoking? Addiction. And I liked the taste.
11. Did you smoke about the same amount later as you did when you started, less, or more? I smoked a pack a day regularly after I became addicted.
12. At what point did you begin to smoke more frequently, and why do you think you did? In college, probably because of the social environment.
13. What particular things did you like about your smoking habit? I liked how cigarettes tasted. I suppose I liked something to do with both my hands and my mouth, too.
14. What particular things did you dislike about your smoking habit? Smell of my clothing; wife did not want to kiss as much; began coughing; finally had a TIA (transient eschemic attack - like a miniature, brief stroke)
15. How did others feel about your smoking? Employer and parents did not like it
16. Have you ever had any medical problems related to smoking? TIA (see above) and coughing
17. What do you know about the risks of smoking? A lot. It can kill you. I still did it.
18. What quitting techniques did you use when you finally quit smoking? Cold turkey
19. Why did you finally quit smoking? Was in the hospital with Transient Eschemic Attack
20. Had you ever tried to quit smoking before? Yes- had successfully quit, cold turkey, for 7-1/2 years
21. When you quit smoking, what were your physical and emotional experiences? I was scared of death.
22. what was the hardest part? I ate too much
23. What ave the positive benefits of quitting been? I no longer cough. My lung capacity is much greater, and there is no tightness in my chest. Best of all, my wife loves to kiss!
24. Did food taste better after you quit? Yes
25. Did you smell food/things better after you quit? It is not noticeable.
