It can be as long as 18 months.

You should feel better with in a week. The cough could last a while. Mine lasted around a month or so.

An herb called "Mullein" helps with smokers cough.
A book I have, "A Practical Guide to Herbs and Natural Supplements" by Marion D. "Micki" Jones & G. Lee Pemberton states the following about Mullein:
Application
* lung problems, as it soothes mucous membranes
* excellent for lung repair after quitting smoking
* in German tradition, 2 drops in each ear 2 times per day to restore lost hearing
* whooping cough
* has anti-microbial (destroys micro-organisms) activity.
I took Mullein for about 6 months due to some respiratory problems I was having (not related to smoking - which I've never done - but have been exposed to 2nd hand smoke). It did wonders on clearing things out.
Also, Good Herbs has a product called LNG-M (in capsules). The same book mentioned above states, concerning this product:
Application:
* all serious lung problems such as asthma, chronic bronchitis and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
* high vitamin A (beta carotene)
* antibacterial
* pain relief
* normalizes blood pressure
* expectorant - a must for anyone who has ever smoked to clean lungs and bronchials
* helps reduce nervous headaches and those caused from incessant coughing
* sinus congestion and headache
* contains organic copper
The LNG-M contains Red Sage Root, Forsythia, Spirulina, Indian Tobacco, and Scullcap. The herbs work best in this combination, taken together. Again, I took this product for about 6 months (with the Mullein), and had great results. These aren't things you take forever, but to assist your body in the healing process (after quitting smoking or dealing w/ some type of respiratory issue).
