How start a speech about quitting smoking?I am writing a persuasive speech on quitting smoking. I have all the information I need to write it, except for a way to start off. I would like to hear your ideas on an introduction that will hook my audience and make them think.

Discuss somebody in your life who died as a result of smoking. As a rule, you need to get the audience's attention within the first 15 (30 at the most) seconds of your speech.

Well I'd like to take the time to tell you how I'm an idiot, and want to get involved in your personal life and tell you what you should or shouldn't do. Even though it's none of my business.
Can you take it from there?

You should go in and start coughing. And then go into your speech saying, "I'm a smoker of ten years. Doctors said my lungs are filled with black tar." (Keep giving symptoms that will put a visual in your audience's head and kind of shock them. End the intro with a clencher like, "My life is now shortened by *so many* years."
Then say, "Ok, you know I'm not really a smoker, buttt that's what I would be like if I did."
Then give rest of speech. :)
Good luck!

I saw a commercial the other day about how many trees a day were cut down to make cigarettes. somewhere in the millions. aside from second hand smoke cigarettes don't harm others but since the planet is going to hell this seems like a unnecessary evil. maybe you could start out saying that if you dont care about your own health enough to stop smoking, think of the future life on this earth and the role you played in its destruction.

start off by coughing violently
