If smoking is known to be an addiction, why doesn't the gov use the rev from cig tax for smoking cessation ?

If smoking is known to be an addiction, why doesn't the gov use the rev from cig tax for smoking cessation ?The state that I live in is proposing a $ 1 per pack increase on cigarettes. I called the governors office to ask about the plans for the revenue from that tax. Not one dime was going into any kind of fund to help smokers quit.

I asked about giving smokers smoking cessation aides such as gum, patches, Chantix through the public health system. Nope. I asked about ANY programs to help people quit smoking. NONE.

So, isn't taxing cigarettes and not putting the money into any program to help smokers quit basically milking people with an addiction?

Wouldn't it be the "right" thing to do to use the money for smoking cessation programs to help people quit?

Isn't that what the anti-smoking people want...for people to not smoke?

Or do they enjoy the benefits of the money that is generated from taxing people with an addiction?

I agree they should use some of that revenue towards that. Although realize some of the really large lawsuits against tobacco companies a couple years ago did just that. They had to fund those anti-smoking commericials, which I'm sure you've seen. Not to mention pay a whole ton of money.

it would be right but the government makes too much money from cigerettes and so although they try to say they want people to quit, they actually cant afford for them to they would end up making money some other way ie tax increases

the politicians are more addicted to the money from the taxes on cigs than the smokers are to the cigs. they will never let that money go to anything that will make the amount decrease, NEVER
