What long term effects does smoking while pregnant have on a child?Does anyone know the latest research on the long term effects smoking while pregnant can have on the fetus, the child and the adult? Can it have an effect all the way into adulthood and old age? I've read that mathematical and verbal skills can be affected. Anyone heard of this?
The reason I asked is that my mother smoked through the pregnancy, and I've had some effects that I wonder were caused by that fact. (such as verbal comprehension skills)

I'm not advocating smoking in anyway but i smoked with my eldest who's now 8 i smoked 40 a day and he's top of his class academically doing maths at a university level and is extremely healthy maybe i was just lucky but i would recommend you stop or at least cut down as it can cause prem labour or low birth weight (although mine were all big weights) i suppose its the risk you take. good luck with the birth!! :)

well ya anythings possible cuz smoking is a bad and cancerous habit. if u ask a doc or look it up, babys take in 80% of wat u take in, including wat u breath. my sister smoked thru her pregnancy til she was 7 months along and now her son has asthma and needs breathing treatments every nite b4 bed cuz his lungs never fully developed due to the smoke. its like putting a cigarette in ur babys mouth. thats how it is. idk if this is something ur going thru or trying to battle, but being a good mother starts with proctecting ur unborn baby, therefore it wouldnt b 2 hard 2 stop being selfish and give it up for the next 9 months ya no. than if u wanna damage ur own lungs, ur baby wont have 2 suffer from ur mistakes. thats how i see it. thats how i would say it to anyother pregnant mother that was smoking.

i dont think there is really a long term effect maybe higher risk the he will smoke but i think its more a concern with the baby's health while you carry it most the time nothing will happen but there always a chance that the smoke you take in to your body can harm the baby to it depends on wither or not thats a risk you want to take i quite smoking the moment i found out i was pregant now my son a year old and im happy to say i havent smoked sense

yes this can be true...it can cause learning disabilities...hyperactivity which not real noticable is and can be in school when it comes to sitting still so they can consintrate...sometimes all it can take to distract the child is his pencil or something as minut as a piece of lint from there pocket. Another thing is if children are around smoking it can cause themto get bronchitis continuasly...just a alittle tip. Hope this helps!
