Appetite changes during the process of quitting cigarettes? My mother is quitting cigarettes, and she has a thyroid problem. It's underactive, so she gains weight easily. She's worried that she'll gain a lot of weight due to habitual eating patterns to replace the habit of smoking.
About how long does it take to stop having nicotine cravings given that the smoker is quitting without any medication, patches, or nicotine replacements?
How long after quitting will she stop having an increased appetite?

I don't know about this matter because I do not smoke, but give your mother all your support and tell her that the best that she can do for her health and well being is quitting smoking. Congratulate her on my part. A doctor can regulate her imbalance and prescribe some medicine to compensate her condition, but tell her that under any excuse to go back to smoking. It is nasty and bad for you. sorry that I couldn't help you more.
Good luck to all of you!

Many years ago, I had a perforated ulcer, and my doctors ordered me to quit smoking. Before the present, chewing gum and candy were the substitutes of choice after quit smoking. It is true that people will eat more and gain weight as a way to compensate. You should help your Mother choose sugar-free and low-calorie foods to fight the habit. Today, my brother uses nicotine patches and nicotine gum to help him quit smoking. There are three levels of nicotine patches. Your health provider will probably start your Mother on the lease-sensitive patch for several weeks, and then increase the concentration of the patches. Nicotine gum may or may not be recommended with nicotine patches. The top scientist at the US number 1 Cancer Center in Texas reports that a person can maintain the cigarette habit with just 10 cigarettes a day. If your Mother can reduce her smoking to just 10 cigarettes, she may be able to reduce the number of cigarettes smoked each day.

Patches and gums have a 50% failure rate, because they don't address the hand-mouth and "throat hit" components of the smoking habit.
Instead try this healthier way to smoke, while gradually decreasing the nicotine content at your own pace:
