Sorry to say but the damage has already been done. Some of your lungs may heal, but most will stay the same. Your chances of getting a lung or throat or mouth cancer after smoking will decrease drastically, and the condition of your lungs wont decrease.

Both my parents smoked more than four years, so it really stinks.

there is no way to tell--everyone would have a different story. --i quit and could tell a lot of difference in a few weeks--some i know took little longer. neighbor just quit and felt better in about 2 weeks. glad you quit and you will be too--you are saving yourself a lot of misery down the road

If you go to the American Lung Association web site, they have information about your lungs returning to normal after stopping smoking. Congratulations on quitting by the way.

Physician's usually consider a person that hasn't smoked in the last five years to be a current non-smoker (although not classed a 'never smoker'). The lungs will also take that amount of time to heal from the abuse that smoking causes. Some of the lung will never return back to normal but much of it will heal to some degree.

You'll likely go through a period of increased coughing and phlegm production, much of it nasty!

Good luck and no matter what, you are doing the right thing!
