What are the harmful physical effects of inhaled nicotine sans tobacco?I am asking this because I recently bought an electronic cigarette, which is basically a nicotine vaporizer. I have not been able to find anything conclusive on the physical harms of nicotine-only products. I know that most stimulants have a negative effect on the cardiovascular system, and that pure nicotine is toxic at high(er) doses, but what about >30mg/day? I have been using the product with decreasing concentrations of nicotine solution to wean off of tobacco addiction. Links to appropriate studies are appreciated.

The electronic cigarette, or e-cig, in most cases looks just like a traditional cigarette and is made of a mouthpiece that holds a nicotine cartridge, a heating element or atomizer, a battery and an LED at the tip of the device. The way e-cigs work is that they contain an airflow meter that is triggered when the user inhales on the device. This activates the circuitry and delivers the nicotine to user by a short burst of vapor that is inhaled. The LED at the tip lights up showing that the battery is working and also making the device appear similar to a lit cigarette. The vapor that is exhaled may look like smoke but it is actually just a water, propylene glycol based vapor that is odorless and harmless. Lots of great info on Vapers Forum

Great place to ask those kinds of questions. Spikey usually has a link to something or someone that will help answer what ever questions you have.

Nicotine bad, radiator antifreeze (propylene glycol) bad.

Go with the FDA's analysis. Here it is: http://www.fda.gov/ForConsumers/ConsumerUpdates/ucm173401.htm
Here's the bottom line: The FDA hasn't finished its analysis of the effects of Electronic Cigarettes. It has analyzed the contents. There are some compounds in the electronic cigarettes they have identified as harmful.
But! And here is the big but that the FDA hasn't addressed! Are the compounds in high enough concentrations to actually have a detrimental effect?
The FDA is silent on this. Tests are ongoing.
I will continue updates and news becomes available because I blog all about electronic cigarettes and electronic smoking.
