How to convince my husband to quit smoking?

How to convince my husband to quit smoking?Okay, so I have been getting involved with a tobacco prevention program at this facility where I volunteer and everyday I get more and more information on smoking. Well, my husband is a smoker. I "think" he goes through 3 packs a week (maybe more) and I really would love it if he quit. I have asked him before and he says he will one day but isn't that what all addicts say? We have two young children one who is turning 2 and another who was just born and I'm so afraid for their health. I read about the dangers of second hand smoke and third hand smoke and it's terrifying. I know he tries hard. He will go outside and smoke but when I walk out 5 minutes later I can still smell the smoke or when he walks back in I can smell the ball of smoke around him. I discovered now that scent is still horribly dangerous even more dangerous than smoking itself so I just would really like it if he quit. I dont' want him to quit just for the children but also for his health as well. I just want us to all be smoke free.

Well, I came up with a small plan but I wanted others opinion. I was thinking of rewarding him for not smoking. Since he smokes 3-4 packs a week I figured for every pack he doesn't buy he gets to save that money. If he doesn't smoke for a year he will have 1456 dollars to spend from not smoking which he can spend it as he pleases. I feel it's a good incentive for him to quit only because he's always asking for a new tool box or even a project car. I tell him we can't afford it which we definitely can't but if he quits we could save up enough money for new tools or a project car.

Do you think this might work to convince him to quit?

say it all...
It's not for you to decide. Suggest maybe, nag no.

Good idea.Throw in a few sexual favors, and you might succeed

Er... no.
He'll need more than that.
Think about it! He ALREADY could simply not buy the cigarettes, save the money and spend it how he likes (unless you're REALLY horribly controlling with money).
I think you'll have to come up with something better to offer him. Besides, this won't be easy for him. You're treating it as something he could simply drop in an instant with no effort at all.

show him movies of what his lungs look like, and that of his children's from second hand smoke. you can't make him quit, just be loving and supporting. buy some patches and gum and leave them where he sees them or when you are having sex, slap one on him when he isn't looking. my friend's daughter has four kids. she goes through 2 packs a day. we are looking at ways to get her to quit also

Nope.

ALL smokers are aware of how much money they are burning away. If it was as easy as that, we'd all quit.

The motivation to stop has to come from the smoker themselves. Nicotine is an addiction that is harder to quit than heroin. He doesn't need you to dangle a carrot in front of him so you can get what you want - he needs to see that HE will benefit.

Talk to him about what you're learning and that you worry about his health. Ask him to discuss quitting smoking options with his doctor. The best way to help an addict is to support them at whatever stage they are at in thier "recovery", not judge them for being addicted.
