I have been a smoker for over 30 years, and I am ready to quit.....again. HELP!!!?

I have been a smoker for over 30 years, and I am ready to quit.....again. HELP!!!?I have tried so many ways and so many times to quit but have never benn sucessful. My doctor wants to put me on Chantix, but my insurance wont pay for it because the town I live in doesnt offer smoking cessation classes I can physically attend. I have spoken to many reformed smokers who say hand down its the only thing that worked for them. I have tried, cutting back a little at a time, patches, cold turkey, changing brands, sucking on candy, chewing straws, chewing gum and prayer. Do you have a success story, and how did you do it??

If I was a smoker and was wanting to quit, I would defiantly try Chantix. It is usually no more than $ 150 cash price (no insurance). The success rate is about 80%. Most of the time doctors prescribe a starting month pack and a continuing month pack. Some patients can quit with the first pack only. Some will need additional packs. I work at a phamacy and ours runs about $ 132 with no insurance. It will be well worth the money!

Go visit a cancer hospital and talk to to people who are dying from this evil habit. I am not trying to be judgmental here. I just have seen my dad for 30 years get up in the morning and pull down four cigarettes to get his coughing stopped. Gagging every breath saying, "I can't quit." Until ... He had a heart attack and the surgeon who did his six bypasses said, "Mr. C. I did your surgery and your heart has small red spot which will heal but, your lungs are another story. You are off cigarettes now two weeks there is no reason for you to start again unless you want to. If you don't quit you have only about of 20% of your lungs left, that aren't stone, and you will be dead in less than six months. Your lungs are the worst piece of tissue I have seen outside an autopsy." Two weeks is physical, more is mental.

He says he still wants one from time to time. But, he is paying the penalty, days on oxygen, not being able to walk fifty feet without stopping because of asthma, and emphysemia.

You will sadly, not quit until you fear an early grave or years of illness, more than a few weeks of withdrawal. Get rid of the, "I'm eternal attitude" first. You gotta have a want to. Or you won't.

Secondly see you doctor again and get the name of a good psychiatrist and a therapist. Cigarettes are an addiction and like in any addiction anti-depressives can help. But, only if you really want to quit.

If this makes you angry, good, channel that anger toward quitting. It is going to take perseverance and patience. It will not happen in days.

Thirdly put them in the trash and don't go back.

Fourthly, Live one moment at a time put every cigarette off for another hour. You will find it much easier to give up moment by moment than week by week.

Fifthly, pray, not just that God helps you quit but that the genetic changes of cancer haven't started and that you don't have a bad case of emphysemia, yet. Also, that God will let you live to see your great-grandchildren born. Life is a gift don't throw it away for a cheap cigarette.

I don't think any cigarette addict will ever quit, just from a success story. It takes fear, and determination, and a lot of help. I think you need more mental help than physical help. Two weeks will kick the physical habit but the mental help will take longer. It will also help to change other habits. Instead of going into the smoking area with the smokers who can tempt you at work go somewhere to meditate and calm your nerves. Instead of lighting up after a meal, go for a brisk walk. Substitute good habits for bad. You know what tempts you avoid it. You will find hour by hour it gets easier.

I have never smoked thank God. But I have asthma and have spent my life wondering why someone would do that to themselves. I also have seen many smokers at work over the years quit. The ones who were successful were the ones who practiced the above good habits.

I hope this helps, I know I haven't been nice. But, until someone tells you the cold hard truth that life is what YOU make it. You will not be successful. Every time you want to smoke think of the people who will grieve and miss you when you die early because of this habit and remember, life is short anyway.
