Why is it so hard to quit smoking?

Why is it so hard to quit smoking?Smokers please explain to someone who has never smoked why it is so hard to quit. I'm always trying to convince my uncle to quit but he says it is too difficult.

What makes it so hard and what does it feel like when you can't have a cigarette and you need to smoke?

it is not hard to quit...it's a bad habit more than anything
you can suck on a lollipop, patches, tooth pick, pen/pencil to replace it......if you can stop smoking for 14days straight....it won't be hard to quit.....b/c by then you'll start to hate the smell and 2nd hand

because of all the nicotine in them i advise you to quit immediately

I smoked for 15 years and finally quit this past new year's. It hasn't been easy but I have so much more energy and time to spend with my kids instead of finding time to smoke my next cigarette I'm playing with my kids and cleaning. I was a 2 pack a day smoker and when I was at work or somewhere where I couldn't smoke I literally felt angry when I couldn't have one. It is a serious addiction, worse than alcohol I think. I'm a happier, healthier person today. There are so many benefits. Show your uncle the website whyquit.com, I guarantee he'll have a whole new outlook.

Nicotine, a chemical in cigs, is very addictive and the reason many find it quite difficult to quit. You can do some research on that to find out more about nicotine addiction, it's affects on the body, and perhaps understand better why quitting is harder for some than others.

Nicotine is addictive, much like alcohol, cocaine, meth, heroin. When you are addicted to something, your body requires it in certain intervals. If you don't oblige, you start going through withdrawals. These withdrawals are so unpleasant, you smoke to make them stop.

When you want to smoke and can't: I would get nervous and edgy, sometimes angry.

I smoked for 17 years and was able to quit only with the help of a prescription, Chantix. It has some side affects, but I took it for three months and haven't smoked in nearly a year now.

Quitting smoking is as hard as quitting anything else. An
alcoholic cannot simply stop drinking, a drug addict cannot simply stop using. It is a long road and they need all of the help they can get. But your uncle has to WANT to quit in order to make it happen.
