Do You Think The Tobacco Companies Are Behind The New Smoking Bans?I know this sounds crazy at first, but there's this new product called the "e-cigarette" that vaporizes nicotine. This makes no second hand smoke so you can still use it in places smoking is banned. Did tobacco company lobbyists push for the smoking bans so they could sell e-cigarettes because they'd be able to make even more money off of them? The nicotine addicts will still buy their other products including cigarettes with or without the ban because most will just go outside or smoke at home, maybe even smoke more when they can because they are aware they won't be able to later. Very few(some but very few) will actually quit because it is highly addictive. Add e-cigarettes into the mix and now they got something they can smoke when they're in bars and restaurants again. And then many will still buy cigarettes to smoke elsewhere for the menthol feeling.
It would not be without precedent. Big Tobacco benefited from the ad ban. Not advertising saved money. Before each company had to advertise because the other companies were doing it and would put them out of business if they didn't, even though if no companies had advertised they would all make bigger profits. "Collusion" with some contract to sue anyone who advertises was impossible because that's illegal under anti-trust law. In a way the Tobacco Companies used the government to "collude" and at the same time make it look like the government was independent of their influence.
Since it has appeal with or without a ban its likely they would've researched and developed it even without plans to contribute to bans. But then once they had the ecigarette they mightve thought they could sell more if smoking was banned. Cigarette sales aren't going to drop that much, even the method is addictive not just the nicotine. Either way substitions still make money. Some foresight that ecigarettes would be profitable without a ban but that with a ban they would make even more money couldve also contributed to this.
A different company? That makes even more sense then that they would be lobbying for these smoking bans.

The e-cigarette still has nicotine in it (I have never tried it but am curious to give it a go to see if you get the same feeling). I believe this is just the tobacco companies desire to stay in business. Same with the Snus products (even though snus has been around since the 19th century). It is merely a workaround to the smoking bans. I highly doubt they would actively sabotage their own product. Research and development does not come cheap.

Ecigs are manufactured and distributed by non-tobacco and non-pharmaceutical companies at the moment. They threaten the profits of both plus the interests of powerful lobbyists that the pharm companies sponsor to promote medical nicotine products. They would prefer to keep us smoking if we're not going to use their products.
