My opinion is no. The truth is 'nobody knows'.

The 'facts' are inconclusive. For starters, (I have always said this and now someone is backing me up) it is impossible to remove all other factors from the studies that have been done. For example, most smokers share common qualities. We are lazy, we eat terribly, we do not exercise, etc. These lifestyle factors may lead to diseases, but I don't believe that smoking actually does.

Dr Ken Denson, of the Thame Thrombosis and Haemostosis Research Foundation in Oxford, has spent the last decade studying smoking-related illnesses and concluded that the real problem isn't the cigarettes, but the poor diet of smokers.

Denson claims most of these studies are flawed because they haven't taken diet into account. Smokers have been shown to eat less fruit and vegetables and more saturated fats than non-smokers, a combination linked to cancer and heart disease. They tend to come from lower social classes already prone to bad diet.

Also, cancer is more hereditary than anything. It is impossible to really draw a conclusion about something affecting the outcome of a disease that is possibly hereditary.

Again, looking at cancer, the number of people that smoke per capita in Japan is much higher than in the US, however, the LCDR (Lung Cancer Death Rate) is much lower in Japan....meaning that while a higher percentage of people smoke, less people get lung cancer in Japan. How does that add up to smoking causing Lung Cancer?!?!?!

The process of developing cancer is complex and multifactorial. It involves genetics, the immune system, cellular irritation, DNA alteration, dose and duration of exposure, and much more. Some of the known risk factors include genetics, asbestos exposure, sex, HIV status, vitamin deficiency, diet, pollution , shipbuilding and even just plain old being lazy. When some of these factors are combined they can have a synergistic effect, but none of these risk factors are directly and independently responsible for "causing" lung cancer!
